The Appalachian Theatre of the High Country

The mission of the nonprofit Appalachian Theatre of the High Country is to provide a quality venue for a variety of artistic genres; to contribute to the region by promoting and strengthening the area’s unique cultural identity and creative history; to enhance business in downtown Boone and the High Country; to provide a cultural hub for the area; and to find new life for a historic building while maintaining its financial sustainability and maximizing its economic impact.

The Southern Appalachian Historical Association

The mission of the Southern Appalachian Historical Association is to explore, preserve, and share the region’s rich cultural heritage.  We accomplish that mission through theatrical, educational, and museum programming.  Our geographical area covered is Watauga and adjacent counties.

Horn in the West

Get ready for an exciting trip back in time, to the 18th Century North Carolina high country before and during the Revolutionary War when the 13 colonies threw off British rule to establish the United States of America.  Since 1952, Horn in the West has offered thrilling outdoor entertainment to generations of Americans. Loved by young and old alike, Horn in the West is located in the heart of Boone, NC.  

Hickory Ridge History Museum

Find out what life was like when the Western North Carolina high country was first    being settled.  Our educators and tour guides lead you in an immersive experience through our six historic cabins, complete with artifacts and furnishings. Created in 1980, Hickory Ridge History Museum strives to recreate the atmosphere of a small mountain community to show guests about the daily lives of our colonial ancestors.

Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts

Appalachian State University’s state-of-the-art, 1,673-seat Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts is home to a multitude of campus and community events, as well as visiting artists from across the region, nation, and the globe. A variety of activities are offered throughout the year to enhance the university’s cultural and intellectual life, contribute to the quality of life for residents of our region, and offer a dynamic arts menu to campus and community audiences.  In keeping with the teaching mission of the university, programs are designed to complement classroom studies and foster lifelong learning through the arts.
